another Grouse Guitars 'under the bed' discovery! Charming and in perfect condition in its original case, this 1957 Levin nylon-string acoustic still has the original dealer decals from a long-gone trader in Sydney. The label indicates it is a 'Model 124', and the serial number stamped into the top of the headstock is 360542, placing its production date squarely in the middle of 1957. The Levin company of Sweden was founded by luthier Herman Karlsson Levin in 1900, and the first guitar and mandolin factory was set up in Gothenburg, Sweden. Prior to establishing the factory, Levin had a shop in Manhattan. Levin was purchased in the early 1970s by the Martin Guitar company. The last Levin guitars were made in 1977. Tonewoods appear to be solid European Spruce top, solid Maple back and sides, and Mahogany neck. Fretboard and bridge appear to be Rosewood, and the nut and bridge saddle are both bone. Scale length is 60cm, the body is 45 cm long, with a 32cm lower bout and 24.5cm upper bout, and a depth of 9.6cm. Nut width is 4.5cm, and string clearance (action) at the 12th fret (body join) is approximately 3mm on the bass side and 2.75mm on the treble side. Neck set is perfect, and the bone bridge saddle has never been shaved or tampered with, so string angle over the saddle is nice and acute, resulting in great tone.
